Field Corn Harvest

Our neighbor grows acres and acres of corn. Some of it is sweet corn, some is field corn and some is even a-MAZE-ing corn! There is about 275 acres of corn all around our small farm. At this time of year, the farmer harvests the field corn which is 10-12 feet tall, into silage or chop which is chopped up bits of corn stalk and ears of corn. This corn ferments and turns into a delicious treat for the milk cows.

Gone!
Nutrients will be returned to the soil with the green miracle, otherwise known as manure! Cover crops will be grown, hay will be baled and by June the corn will be sprouting again.

Change is in the Air

Our farm is surrounded by a bigger farm that produces fresh, local produce for the Rogue Valley. In addition to the local vegetables growing in the field, there are a large number of acres dedicated to field corn. This corn may grow to be 10 to 12 feet tall. It is turned into silage and fed to the cows throughout the winter. Now it is time for the harvest of the field corn.

Anna and Marial

Watching kids and dogs are a very precious time. Anna spent the day outside helping. She is such a good little helper. In between hauling, holding, carrying and delivering, Anna managed to spend some quality one on one time with Marial who is about 5 year olds.

The Pigs are Coming!

A new batch of little Tamworth piglets are on their way to the farm and set to arrive in April. These little Irish heritage pigs have long snout and red hair. Hey, they sound Irish already! The barns are ready for the new visitors and the grass is growing greener by the day.

We prefer our piglets to stay with the sow until they are about 8 weeks old. This gives them a solid healthy start and we all know the piglets prefer their mamas! Once they arrive at the farm, the little weaner pigs will have full access to the green pastures, left over sunflower seeds from the summer, and black walnuts.

We are having some amazing Spring weather. The sun is shining and then it is raining, the fog is heavy and then the winds are blowing. All of this weather is the change of season, and all of the moisture is good for the pasture, the fruit trees and the water table.
