Baby Chicks are Here!

Our newest batch of baby chicks have arrived! There are forty-two little nubbins and peepers. These little fluff balls are part of the Araucana count.

 
There are eighteen New Hampshire Reds. They were popularized in the 1930's as a dual purpose bird. They are known to be fast growing, on the large side, and they are also great layers.

 
The New Hampshire Reds were surprisingly different from the Rhode Islands that we got last year. Surprising because they have a similar lineage. These little peeps are just three days old.

 
They need plenty of fresh water which means about three changes a day, warmth from a heat lamp, and plenty of food to eat at will!


This batch is a combination of Araucanas and Silver Laced Winged Wyandottes. The Araucanas lay the beautiful green or blue or turquoise or even pink eggs. All of the others will lay a shade of brown; some lighter and some darker than the others.

Brand new baby chicks have a soft, peep, peep, peep song when heat,food,and water are just right...kinda sounds like all of us, huh?!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

The day began with cinnamon rolls, coffee, and fresh snow in the mountains...also known as white gold at this time of year!

Corned beef is set to simmer and cook all day until it is tender and falls apart with a fork. It is seasoned with mustard seeds, bay leaf, whole black and red peppers, and basil.

Sunshine streamed through the windows all day. Canning shelves are more than half eaten and we feel so lucky that our garden produced enough to preserve to eat our farm food for a while longer.

Chives are loving the sunshine and are beginning to bulb at the tips for a lavender colored blossom. Leprechauns deposited golden chocolates on the counter top too!

A break in the mid afternoon for a toast and a blessing and prayers to our family and friends to live life in the ways of love, faith, hope, and charity.

Irish soda bread with golden raisins is out of the oven and dinner is nearly ready to serve.

The sunshine continued into the afternoon and early evening as dinner was set on the table.

Corned beef, cabbage, boiled potatoes, carrots, bread and butter.

Late evening Irish coffees and a movie The Quiet Man, with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara finished off the evening of a perfectly green and lucky day!

Preparations are Underway

We are getting ready for The Butcher Shop Grand Re Opening on April 30 and May 1. We will be setting up table with yummy pork samples and information about our wee little farm. If you are in the area, come on out to Eagle Point to see us. We will be taking orders for the ten Tamworth pigs we have out in the pasture right now. Mmmm-mmmm!The Butcher Shop asked local farmers that are supplying meat and produce to the store for a brief bio, or photo, or a combination of both so that customers know there are real people in the area growing real food. The picture above is our version of a photo-bio! Come on out and meet the farmers!

Pretty Little Hen

This little hen is an Americana Hen and she lays the prettiest pale blue eggs. She is busy all the time and has a distinct personality. She expects special favors like a few of her own personal little nibbles from the compost bucket and she seeks out places to cultivate that have been resting over the winter. This little hen is about one and a half years old and we expect her to keep laying eggs for a few years. She comes running to the sound of us calling "Chick, chick, chick, chick" and will slyly follow us around the yard.
